Qso Absorption Lines and the Halos of Cluster Galaxies

چکیده
In the local universe, most QSO absorption-lines seem to arise from gas in extended 100 kpc halos around spiral galaxies. We present evidence that at high redshift, at least some absorption lines come from diierent sources: the gas is associated not with spiral galaxy halos but with the intra-cluster medium of proto-galaxy clusters. This gas, which is neutral and lumpy, may form a true intra-cluster medium, but it is more likely to be associated with the halos of young elliptical galaxies. This gas may turn into the X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium of present-day rich galaxy clusters.

On the Origin of the Clustered Qso Metal Absorption Lines
Observations show that there is significant clustering of QSO metal absorption lines within the range of velocity dispersion between 200km/sec and 600 km/sec. With a reasonable supernova rate, it is shown that high velocity gases driven by SNe and/or strong stellar winds could explain the clustered absorptions, provided that QSO metal-line absorbers are galactic halos or dwarf galaxies. Rich cl...
متن کاملOn the Halo Occupation of Dark Baryons
We introduce a new technique that adopts the halo occupation framework for understanding the origin of QSO absorption-line systems. Our initial study focuses specifically on Mg II absorbers. We construct a model of the gaseous content in which the absorption equivalent width Wr is determined by the the amount of cold gas, in the form of discrete clouds, along a sightline through a halo. The two...
متن کاملThe Absence of Diffuse Gas around the Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxy Leo I1
We have obtained spectra of three QSO/AGNs with the GHRS aboard the Hubble Space Telescope to search for absorption from low column density gas in the halo of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy Leo I. The probe sight lines pass 2.1, 3.7, and 8.1 kpc from the center of the galaxy, but no C IV, Si II, or Si IV absorption is found at the velocity of Leo I. The absence of low-ionization species sug...
متن کاملDiscovery of the Galaxy Proximity Effect and Implications for Measurements of the Ionizing Background Radiation at Low Redshifts
We present an analysis of galaxy and QSO absorption line pairs toward 24 QSOs at redshifts between z ≈ 0.2 and 1 in an effort to establish the relationship between galaxies and absorption lines in physical proximity to QSOs. We demonstrate the existence of a galaxy proximity effect, in that galaxies in the vicinities of QSOs do not show the same incidence and extent of gaseous envelopes as gala...
متن کاملProbing the Large Scale Structure with QSOs and radio-galaxies
QSOs and radio-galaxies, together with the CMB, “normal” galaxies and clusters, represent the main source of information about the origin and evolution of the Large Scale Structure. They can be used either directly, as tracers of the density peaks, or as cosmic lighthouses, probing the Universe along the line of sight with their conspicuous flow of photons. Observations of the QSO and radio-gal...
